Management

Treatment of hypocalcaemia

  • Generalized convulsions
    • Calcium gluconate (10%) IV:
      • Loading dose 0.2 ml/kg slowly
      • Continuous infusion 4 - 6 ml/kg/24 hr
  • Prolonged hypocalcaemia
    • Alphacalcidol 0.06 - 0.1 g/kg/day orally or IV for a few days in hospital if necessary

Oral calcium
Calcium lactate 50 mg Ca 2+/kg/day divided in 4 - 6 doses for 2 weeks.

Vitamin D treatment

  • 2000 units/day orally for a month simultaneously with the recommended normal daily intake of vitamin D (which must be ensured continuously).
  • Recommendations for prevention are for 200 IU of vitamin D a day for infants and children
