Zoledronic acid

Drugs used in osteoporosis acting on bone metabolism

Description

Zoledronate, also known as zoledronic acid, is an intravenous (IV) medication that belongs to a class of drugs known as bisphosphonates. It is an antiresorptive therapy used to treat various bone conditions, including both malignant and benign diseases.

Mechanism of action

It inhibits osteoclast activity and skeletal Ca release induced by tumours. It decreases serum Ca and phosphorus, and increases their elimination. In osteoporosis, it inhibits osteoclast-mediated resorption, thus reducing bone turnover.
