Vinblastine

Anti neoplastic

Description

Vinblastine sulfate is a type of chemotherapy called a vinca alkaloid. Vinca alkaloids interfere with microtubules (cellular structures that help move chromosomes during mitosis). They block cell growth by stopping mitosis (cell division).

Mechanism of action

Interferes with metabolic pathways of amino acids leading from glutamic acid to the citric acid cycle and urea. Vinblastine has an effect on cell energy production required for mitosis and interferes with nucleic acid synthesis. Reversal of anti tumour effect by glutamic acid or tryptophan has occurred.
