Trihexyphenidyl

Drugs used in parkinsonism and other movement disorders

Description

Trihexyphenidyl is used alone or together with other medicines (e.g., levodopa) to treat Parkinson's disease. By improving muscle control and reducing stiffness, this medicine allows more normal movements of the body as the disease symptoms are reduced.

Mechanism of action

The cholinergic activity in CNS (striatum) is inhibited and the beneficial effect is due to anticholinergic action. Tremor is reduced but the effect on relieving rigidity is not so pronounced. Salivation is reduced because of peripheral antimuscarinic action.
