Description

used to treat infections including urinary tract infections, middle ear infections (otitis media), bronchitis, traveler's diarrhea, and shigellosis (bacillary dysentery).

Mechanism of action

The drugs exert their action on two step enzymatic pathway for tetrahydrofolic acid synthesis. Sulphamethoxazole inhibits PABA incorporation into folic acid; trimethoprim inhibits reduction of dihydrofolate to tetrahydrofolate.
