Description

This medication is used to treat bacterial eye infections (such as conjunctivitis). It belongs to a class of drugs known as sulfa antibiotics. Sulfacetamide works by stopping the growth of bacteria. This medication treats only bacterial eye infections.

Mechanism of action

Sulfacetamide is a sulfonamide antibiotic. Sulfonamides are synthetic bacteriostatic antibiotics, that are active against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. It blocks the synthesis of dihydrofolic acid by inhibiting the enzyme dihydropteroate synthase.
