Stilboestrol

Hormones & fertility agents

Description

Diethylstilbestrol was used as a postcoital emergency contraceptive. It has also been used for the prevention of postpartum breast engorgement, for dysfunctional menstrual cycles, and for the treatment of female hypogonadism

Mechanism of action

Oestrogen responsive tissues show putative receptor proteins for oestrogens. Oestrogens are first bound to a cytoplasmic receptor protein and following modification this complex is translocated to the nucleus where the ultimate binding occurs and as a result of such binding metabolic alteration occurs. In metastatic carcinoma of prostate oestrogens counter the androgenic influence by competing for receptor sites.
