Stavudine

Anti retroviral

Description

Stavudine is used along with other medications to treat human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. Stavudine is in a class of medications called nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs). It works by decreasing the amount of HIV in the blood.

Mechanism of action

Stavudine rapidly enters cells by diffusion. Stavudine triphosphate acts as a competitive inhibitor of reverse transcriptase with respect to deoxythymidine triphosphate, and incorporation causes termination of DNA chain elongation. It inhibits replication of HIV in human cells.
