Description

Sibutramine is a serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor which has been used for short- and long-term therapy of obesity, but which was withdrawn from use because of increased risk of cardiovascular events

Mechanism of action

Sibutramine, acts by blocking uptake of both serotonin and norepinephrine in the CNS has been launched in the Indian market recently. At doses of 10 mg/day, sibutramine results in average weight losses of 5-10 kg in 6 month studies. It also appears to improve 1-year outcomes in patients on very low caloric diets.
