Mechanism of action
It acts at brain synaptosomes as well as at platelet surfaces. It increases serotonin concentration in synaptic clefts and prolongs its activity at postsynaptic receptor sites. Sertraline acutely, reduces serotonin turnover and chronically, may, desensitise 5-HT2 receptor-coupled transmembrane effector systems without down regulating 5-HT2 receptors.
