Racecadrotil

Anti diarrhoeals

Description

Racecadotril is an antisecretory agent with a different mechanism of action from existing antidiarrhoeal agents. It functions by selective inhibition of the enzyme neutral endopeptidase (also known as enkephalinase), a cell membrane peptidase enzyme found most commonly on the epithelium of the small intestine.

Mechanism of action

Reduces hypersecretion of water and electrolytes into the intestinal lumen by preventing the degradation of enkephalins. Rececadotril is a potent and specific inhibitor of enkephalinase. It does not reduce intestinal lumen motility.
