Polio Vaccine (Oral)

Vaccines

Description

Oral poliovirus vaccines (OPV) are the predominant vaccine used in the fight to eradicate polio.  There are different types of oral poliovirus vaccine, which may contain one, a combination of two, or all three different serotypes of attenuated vaccine

Mechanism of action

Oral poliovirus vaccine (OPV), which is a live-virus vaccine, and inactivated poliovirus vaccine (IPV), which is a killed vaccine that is administered by injection. Both produce immunity in over 95% of people. The live-virus vaccine, however, has been associated with a vaccine-associated paralysis.
