Piroxicam

NSAIDs

Description

Piroxicam is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) used to treat pain and help relieve symptoms of arthritis (eg, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis), such as inflammation, swelling, stiffness, and joint pain.

Mechanism of action

Piroxicam exert their action by inhibiting the biosynthesis and release of prostaglandins. These drugs inhibit cyclooxygenase enzyme and hence prostaglandin synthesis. These compounds generally do not inhibit formation of leukotrienes which also contribute to inflammation.
