Pilocarpine

Anti glaucoma drugs

Description

Pilocarpine is an alkaloid pharmacologic used in treating xerostomia resulting from radiation exposure, Sjogren syndrome, and glaucoma.

Mechanism of action

It is a muscarinic agonist and when applied topically to eye it causes miosis, contraction of ciliary muscle and decrease in intraocular pressure. To obtain sustained and prolonged action, ocular insert Pilocarpine is available. Aqueous sterile solution of Pilocarpine is available for topical use in concentrations ranging from 0.5% to 4%.
