Phenytoin

Anti convulsants

Description

Phenytoin is a hydantoin derivative, a first-generation anti-convulsant drug that is effective in the treatment of generalized tonic-clonic seizures, complex partial seizures, and status epilepticus without significantly impairing neurological function.

Mechanism of action

Phenytoin inhibits episodes of repetitive neuronal firing and also limits the spread of seizure activity. It causes stabilization of the neuronal membrane and causes decrease in post-tetanic potentiation. Due to these actions the epileptic attacks are controlled.
