Paclitaxel

Anti neoplastic

Description

Paclitaxel is a type of chemotherapy called a taxane. Taxanes interfere with structures in a cell called microtubules that help move chromosomes during mitosis (cell division). Paclitaxel stops the growth of cancer cells and other dividing cells by blocking cell division.

Mechanism of action

It binds specifically to the beta-tubulin subunit of microtubule and appears to antagonize the disassembly of this cyto-skeletal protein. Arrest in mitosis follows. The cell killing is dependent on both drug concentration and duration of cell exposure.
