Oxytocin

Drugs acting on the uterus

Description

Oxytocin is a natural hormone that manages key aspects of the female and male reproductive systems, including labor and delivery and lactation, as well as aspects of human behavior. Hypothalamus makes oxytocin, but your posterior pituitary gland stores and releases it into your bloodstream.

Mechanism of action

Oxytocin is a peptide hormone released by the posterior pituitary that causes uterine muscle contraction during labor. It’s also responsible for the milk let-down reflex where milk is ejected during breastfeeding. It’s commonly used to induce labor or help strengthen uterine contractions to facilitate delivery.
