Drugs used in emergency, poisoning

Description

Naltrexone is used to help narcotic dependents who have stopped taking narcotics to stay drug-free. It is also used to help alcoholics stay alcohol-free. The medicine is not a cure for addiction.

Mechanism of action

Naltrexone is a pure opioid antagonist. It markedly attenuates or completely blocks reversibly, the subjective effects of intravenously administered opioids. Naltrexone blocks the effects of opioids by competitive binding at opioid receptors.
