Mechanism of action
Mucolytic action of acetylcysteine is related to the sulphydryl group in the molecule which acts directly to split disulphide bonds in the mucoprotein molecular complexes resulting in decreased mucus viscosity. In paracetamol poisoning it protects the liver by maintaining or restoring glutathione levels, or by acting as an alternate substrate for conjugation with the reactive metabolite of paracetamol.
