Mesalazine lacks sulphonamide in its chemical structure and may be used in patients who are sensitive to Sulphalazine, Sulphonamides. It inhibits the synthesis of prostaglandins.

It is usually used to induce or maintain remission of mildly to moderately active ulcerative colitis. Clinicians may use mesalamine off-labeled in Crohn disease after surgical resection of the affected bowel.
