Mechanism of action
Inhibits purine metabolism.The anticancer drug 6-mercaptopurine (6-MP) inhibits de novo purine synthesis and acts as an antiproliferative agent by interfering with protein, DNA and RNA synthesis and promoting apoptosis.
Mercaptopurine is used alone or with other chemotherapy drugs to treat acute lymphocytic leukemia . Mercaptopurine is in a class of medications called purine antagonists.
