Mephentermine

Drugs used in emergency, poisoning

Description

Mephentermine is a synthetic sympathomimetic used to treat hypotension. It increases stroke volume and thus increases both systolic and diastolic BP. There is also a variable degree of peripheral vasoconstriction.

Mechanism of action

It acts directly and by releasing endogenous norepinephrine. The cardiac contraction is increased. The pressor response involves both increased cardiac output and peripheral vasoconstriction.
