Mebeverine

Anti diarrhoeals

Description

Mebeverine (sometimes called mebeverine hydrochloride) is a type of medicine known as an antispasmodic. It helps with muscle spasms. It can be used to ease painful stomach cramps if you have irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) or other conditions. It works by relaxing certain muscles in your gut.

Mechanism of action

Mebeverine is an antispasmodic agent that works directly on intestinal smooth muscles and may also have a local anaesthetic effect and weak atropine-like activity. Mebeverine is an anticholinergic but its mechanism of action is not known; it appears to work directly on smooth muscle within the gastrointestinal tract and may have an anaesthetic effect, may affect calcium channels, and may affect muscarinic receptors. It is metabolized mostly by esterases, and almost completely.
