Description

Heparin is an anticoagulant taken to prevent blood clots or keep an existing clot from getting worse. People often receive heparin through an IV during a hospital stay, but can also injecton it into the skin. This medicine is sometimes called a blood thinner,.

Mechanism of action

It acts by activating plasma antithrombin III which rapidly inhibits activated coagulation factors: IXa, Xa, XIa, XIIa, plasmin, kallikrein and thrombin, thus inhibiting conversion of fibrinogen to fibrin.
