Gemcitabine

Anti neoplastic

Description

Gemcitabine is a chemotherapy drug used as a treatment for different types of cancer, including bladder and breast cancer. Depending on your cancer type you might have gemcitabine on its own or in combination with other cancer drugs. You might also have it alongside radiotherapy treatment

Mechanism of action

It exhibits cell phase specificity, killing primarily cells undergoing DNA synthesis as well as blocking the progression of cells through the G1/S-phase boundary. Gemcitabine is metabolized intracellularly by nucleoside kinases to active diphosphate and triphosphate nucleosides and the combined action of these nucleosides leads to inhibition of DNA synthesis.
