Description

Also known as diethylstilbestrol diphosphate (DESDP), is an estrogen medication which is used in the treatment of prostate cancer in men. It is given by slow intravenous infusion once per day to once per week or by mouth once per day.

Mechanism of action

Oestrogen responsive tissues show putative receptor proteins for oestrogens. Oestrogens are first bound to a cytoplasmic receptor protein and following modification this complex is translocated to the nucleus where the ultimate binding occurs and as a result of such binding metabolic alteration occurs. In metastatic carcinoma of prostate oestrogens counter the androgenic influence by competing for receptor sites.
