Enalapril

Anti hypertensives

Description

Enalapril is an angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor. It works by blocking a substance in the body that causes the blood vessels to tighten. As a result, enalapril relaxes the blood vessels. This lowers blood pressure and increases the supply of blood and oxygen to the heart.

Mechanism of action

ACE inhibitors have several advantages. It does not have direct sympatholytic activity. Hence, cardiovascular reflexes are intact and postural hypotension is rare. It can be administered in patients of hypertension with diabetes mellitus or bronchial asthma. It can be administered safely. ACE-inhibitors are efficacious drugs, are well tolerated and are useful antihypertensive drugs.
