Mechanism of action
he incorporation of omega-fatty acids in the membranes of the cells increases the physiochemical stability and functional integrity. It also makes the cells less susceptible to oxidative damage and also decreases the formation of lipid peroxidases. Omega-3 fatty acids lower triglyceride in normal persons as well as those with raised triglyceride levels. Vit. E is thought to exert its activity by virtue of its antioxidant property, with effect on the following factors associated with cardiovascular disorders;
- blood lipids,
- arterial prostacyclin (PGI2),
- platelets. Vit. E., being a potent lipid soluble antioxidant, is thought to help in prevention of atherosclerosis by blocking oxidative modification of LDL.
