Edetate Calcium Di-Sodium

Drugs used in emergency, poisoning

Description

Edetate calcium disodium is a chelating agent used to treat lead poisoning. Edetate calcium disodium is a metal ion chelator used to reduce blood concentrations and depot stores of lead from the body.

Mechanism of action

The calcium-disodium and the disodium salts of ethylene tetraacetic acid (EDTA) form stable and highly water soluble complexes with many divalent and trivalent metallic ions and owe their therapeutic application to this chelating property.
