Mechanism of action
The main action of digoxin is its direct effect on heart to increase the force of myocardial contraction. The beneficial effects of digoxin in patients of heart failure are explained on the basis of +ve inotropic action. It also has direct -ve chronotropic effect. In patients of heart failure after digoxin administration there is decreased heart size, venous pressure and blood volume. Diuresis occurs and there is relief of oedema.
