Dextrose 5% + NaCl 0.9 %

IV fluids

Description

5% Dextrose and 0.9% Sodium Chloride Injection is a sterile, non-pyrogenic solution intended for fluid and electrolyte replenishment and caloric supply in single dose containers. May be administered intravenously using aseptic technique. It contains no antimicrobial agents.

Mechanism of action

Carbohydrate in the form of dextrose may aid in minimizing liver glycogen depletion and exerts a protein-sparing action. Dextrose injected parenterally undergoes oxidation to carbon dioxide and water. Sodium chloride in water dissociates to provide sodium (Na+) and chloride (Cl¯) ions.
