Dexfenfluramine

Drugs used in obesity

Description

Dexfenfluramine, marketed as dexfenfluramine hydrochloride under the name Redux, is a serotonergic anorectic drug: it reduces appetite by increasing the amount of extracellular serotonin in the brain.

Mechanism of action

It activates the 5-HT (serotonin) 2C receptor. Serotonin is a neurotransmitter involved in regulation of fat storage and many other biological processes. Serotonin binds to several different receptors with related but distinct biological effects. Dexfenfluramine causes weight loss by suppressing appetite through alterations in serotonin levels in the brain. Weight loss is maintained only as long as the individual keeps taking the drug.
