Danazol

Description

Danazol is in a class of medications called androgenic hormones. It works to treat endometriosis by shrinking the displaced tissue of the uterus. It works to treat fibrocystic breast disease by blocking the release of hormones that cause the breast pain and lumps.

Mechanism of action

It suppresses pituitary ovarian axis and reduces the release of FSH and LH. It also has weak androgenic activity causing endometrial atrophy. It causes the disappearance of nodularity with pain relief in fibrocystic breast disease. In endometriosis, danazol causes return of ovulation 30-90 days after stopping the drug.
