Description

Penicillamine is a chelator class of drug used in the treatment of medical problems such as Wilson's disease (too much copper in the body) as a chelating agent and rheumatoid arthritis ,scleroderma and systemic lupus erythematosus as a immunomodulator. Also, it is used to prevent kidney stones.

Mechanism of action

Penicillamines form a water soluble complex with copper mercury and lead ions and facilitate their excretion in the urine. Also it inhibits various enzymes like transaminases and desulfydrases.
