Cytosine Arabinoside

Anti neoplastic

Description

Cytosine arabinoside (Ara-C) is a pyrimidine analog that is metabolized into Ara-CTP, the active moiety that inhibits DNA polymerase. It is commonly used in multiagent chemotherapy regimens for the treatment of leukemia and lymphoma, as well as for neoplastic meningitis.

Mechanism of action

Cytosine acts through direct DNA damage and incorporation into DNA. It exhibits cell phase specificity, primarily killing cells undergoing DNA synthesis (S-phase) and blocks the progression of cells from the G1 phase to the S-phase. Cytarabine acts through the inhibition of DNA polymerase.
