Description

Cytarabine is a medication used in the management and treatment of leukemias and lymphomas. It belongs to the antimetabolic group of medications. This activity reviews the indications, action, and contraindications for cytarabine as a valuable agent in treating acute myeloid leukemia (and other leukemias)

Mechanism of action

Cytarabine acts through direct DNA damage and incorporation into DNA. It exhibits cell phase specificity, primarily killing cells undergoing DNA synthesis (S-phase) and blocks the progression of cells from the G1 phase to the S-phase. Cytarabine acts through the inhibition of DNA polymerase.
