Colistin Sulphate is used in the treatment of severe bacterial infections. It is used to treat certain types of serious infections which are not responding to other antibiotics. Colistin Sulphate is an antibiotic. It kills bacteria by destroying the bacterial cell membrane.
It is bactericidal and has a detergent like action on the cell membrane with affinity for phospholipids and gets incorporated between phospholipids and protein film in gram negative bacterial cell membrane causing membrane distortion or pseudopore formation .It may also inactive bacterial endotoxin.
