Mechanism of action
Codeine is a narcotic pain reliever (analgesic). It depresses cough centre but as 1/3 potent as morphine. Its precise mechanism of pain relief is not clearly understood.
Codeine is an opioid cough suppressant (antitussive) that affects a certain part of the brain, reducing the urge to cough.
