Chloroxylenol

Anti septics (local)

Description

Para-Chloro-meta-xylenol, is an antisepticand disinfectant used on skin and surgical instruments. It is found in antibacterial soaps, wound cleansing applications and household antiseptics.

Mechanism of action

The hyroxyl-OH groups of the molecule binds to certain proteins on the bacterial cell membrane and causes bacterial cell contents to leak out, which allows the entry of the Choroxyenol into the bacterial cell. This binds with more proteins and enzymesand thus disenabling the bacterial cell function. At higher concentrations of chloroxylenol the bacterial cell becomes coagulated and cease to function leading to cell death.
