Mechanism of action
All cephalosporins act by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis and are bactericidal. Also the autolytic enzymes in cell wall may be activated leading to bacterial death. Cephalosporins after administration are widely distributed throughout body fluids. Cephalosporins are primarily excreted by the kidneys and dosage should be altered in patients of renal disease. It is important to note that patients who have shown immediate type hypersensitivity reaction to Penicillin should receive cephalosporin with great caution.
