Mechanism of action
Ceftriaxone acts by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis and is bactericidal. Also the autolytic enzymes in cell wall may be activated leading to bacterial death. Ceftriaxone after administration is widely distributed throughout body fluids. Ceftriaxone is primarily excreted by the kidneys and dosage should be altered in patients of renal disease. It is important to note that patients who have shown immediate type hypersensitivity reaction to Penicillin should receive ceftriaxone with great caution.
