Antibiotics

Description

It is an oral, third generation cephalosporin antibiotic, active against gram positive and gram negative organisms.

Mechanism of action

Cefpodoxime acts by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis and are bactericidal. Also the autolytic enzymes in cell wall may be activated leading to bacterial death. Cefpodoxime after administration is widely distributed throughout body fluids. Cefpodoxime is primarily excreted by the kidneys and dosage should be altered in patients of renal disease. It is important to note that patients who have shown immediate type hypersensitivity reaction to Penicillin should receive cefpodoxime with great caution.
