Description

It is a third generation cephalosporin antibiotic against gram negative and gram positive bacterial infections.

Mechanism of action

Cefotaxime acts by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis and are bactericidal. Also the autolytic enzymes in cell wall may be activated leading to bacterial death. Cefotaxime after administration is widely distributed throughout body fluids. Cefotaxime is primarily excreted by the kidneys and dosage should be altered in patients of renal disease. It is important to note that patients who have shown immediate type hypersensitivity reaction to Penicillin should receive cefotaxime with great caution.
