Cefixime

Antibiotics

Description

It is an antibiotic of third generation cephalosporin used to treat bacterial infection.

Mechanism of action

Cefixime acts by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis and is bactericidal. Also the autolytic enzymes in cell wall may be activated leading to bacterial death. Cefixime after administration is widely distributed throughout body fluids. Cefixime is primarily excreted by the kidneys and dosage should be altered in patients of renal disease. It is important to note that patients who have shown immediate type hypersensitivity reaction to Penicillin should receive Cefixime with great caution.
