A semi-synthetic derivative of artemisinin
It is a schizonticidal drug and leads to destruction of the asexual erythrocytic forms of Plasmodium falciparum and P. vivax, which is highly efficacious in treating chloroquine-resistant falciparum malaria, and complicated falciparum malaria including cerebral malaria. There is inhibition of protein synthesis during growth of trophozoites.
