Sertraline

Anti depressants

Description

Sertraline is a medication used to manage and treat the major depressive disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, panic disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, premenstrual dysphoric disorder, and social anxiety disorder. It is in the SSRI class of medications.

Mechanism of action

It acts at brain synaptosomes as well as at platelet surfaces. It increases serotonin concentration in synaptic clefts and prolongs its activity at postsynaptic receptor sites. Sertraline acutely, reduces serotonin turnover and chronically, may, desensitise 5-HT2 receptor-coupled transmembrane effector systems without down regulating 5-HT2 receptors.
