Mechanism of action
The drugs exert their action on two step enzymatic pathway for tetrahydrofolic acid synthesis. Sulphamethoxazole inhibits PABA incorporation into folic acid; trimethoprim inhibits reduction of dihydrofolate to tetrahydrofolate.
