Procainamide

Anti arrhythmia

Description

Procainamide is a medication used to manage and treat ventricular arrhythmias, supraventricular arrhythmias, atrial flutter/fibrillation, and Wolf-Parkinson-White syndrome. It is in the antiarrhythmic Agent Class 1A class of medications.

Mechanism of action

Procainamide’s sodium channel blocking properties result in an increased threshold for excitability, and decreased automaticity. As a consequence of its potassium channel blocking properties, it prolongs action potential in most cardiac cells. It has atropine like action which is significant and also blocks alpha-adrenergic receptors.
