Propylthiouracil

Thyroid & anti-thyroid drugs

Description

Propylthiouracil is an antithyroid medicine. It works by making it harder for the body to use iodine to make thyroid hormone. It does not block the effects of thyroid hormone that was made by the body before its use was begun

Mechanism of action

Propylthiouracil depresses the formation of thyroid hormone. It either interferes with incorporation of iodine into thyroidal residues or with coupling of such residues to form tri-iodothyronine by inhibiting the enzyme peroxidase or both. It inhibits conversion of T4 to T3 peripherally.
