Morphine

Opiate analgesics

Description

Morphine belongs to the group of medicines called narcotic analgesics (pain medicines). It acts on the central nervous system (CNS) to relieve pain.

Mechanism of action

It causes analgesia probably by acting on opioid receptors in CNS. Morphine does not have a ceiling dose as far as its analgesic effect is concerned. Morphine also induces sleep. On I.V. administration it produces immediate action.
